I never knew about the 03 outlander pump before now. I noticed in looking up the part number for it it's also listed for the 4g69 on teh 2012 eclipse. Interesting.

The 4g64 timing belt arrives tomorrow. I tried out the 4g63 one and didn't like how it fitted up. If it ends up being no real difference, I'll be sorely disappointed.

If you think about it, assembly does not take that long. I've actually been dragging ass and dicking around with parts that may or may not fit. Otherwise, it doesn't take longer than a day to assemble a motor.
Plus, it has actually been a rather long process with all the machine work that been going on since October.

I wasn't being sarcastic I guess time went by pretty fast

I was going with the 4g63 timing belt as well because people say it's stronger ..why is it that u didn't like and went for the 4g64 ..I though the only difference was going to be that the evo timing belt was going to be tight so u had and the 4g64 was going to be a little bigger so on one u have to retard the timing and advance on the other belt

Sorry, it wasn't my intention to make it sound like you were being sarcastic.

As to the timing belt issue, I'm finding myself to be dramatically off on cam timing while trying to degree my cams, at least according to the cam card. An example is that my cam card is telling me I should be seeing my intake cam open at 7 degrees before TDC. Yet my cam lobe isn't making contact with the rocker until 50 degrees ADTC, which can't be right.
OEM, the timing belt between the evo 8 and the DOCH 4g64 are teh same strength. The 9 uses a kevlar one oem, so some people switch to that one. Otherwise, only kevlar aftermarket belts come in 153 tooth length. That being said, there are more than a few big power 4g64 swaps in DSMs, Evos, and 3g eclipses making plenty of power without issue using non kevlar belts.

Screw it. I know for a fact the cams are not an issue. I've been running on them for over 4 years without issue. I'm going to re-install the belt and get the motor dropped back in by tomorrow.

Hmm, I thought I had updated this. Well anyways, tuning delayed to next weekend on account of a technical issue being sorted out.

Oh joy of joy. Having fun with the knock sensor. FML. No numbers yet until I get this sorted out and back on the dyno.

Throwing an absurd amount of knock according to the sensor, but not audibly. I'm reasonably certain I screwed up the knock sensor on account of my over-torquing it. Throw in a 2.4 swap, which are loud to begin with, add a balance shaft delete, add a lightwieght crank pulley and you have a recipe for making your knock sensor go insane.

Re: Challenge Accepted (WANTED's motor build)

Post by WANTED on Thu Jul 11, 2013 8:34 pm

Late update, but I've been slacking.

Just to be safe I pulled my oil pan to make sure there was nothing mechanical causing the knock sensor to go off. I happened to in fact find that one of my oil squirters was making contact with the back of a piston. No real damage to anything except to the squirter, which remained intact. So I swapped it out and ensured it was bent enough this time.

Since I had it off, I decided to continue to mod the cursed oil pan yet again. Long overdue, but I finally "massaged" it so that it's easier to take off with the engine in the car and not fight me as much. Pics to follow soon of what I did.

And yes, I did mod the truck a bit, but that's for a different venue.

On the plus side, the pan finally comes on and off the car absolutely smoothly with the engine in the car and the transmission mated.

So I finally got my knock sensor swapped out. Not a fun job with the IM on the car. It's pretty much impossible to get a crescent wrench on it that way. Mitsu makes a special socket for it, but rather than spend an arm and a leg for a one time use tool I spent $6 and a half hour with teh air grinder to make what I needed. Not exactly pretty, but It got the job done with ease. Saturday, here we come.
