02 WRX transmission failure
Hey guys I was driving my bugeye on Friday (my daily driver) and all of the sudden shifting from 3-4 I heard a click and my car was acting as if it was in neutral while it was in fourth gear I shifted to first as the car rolled to a stop and tried to drive it but the car would just rev up and not move I tried every gear and nothing does this mean I need a new tranny.? Any advice is appreciated
Thank you
Thank you

Does the clutch still have pressure? If you can turn the car off adn then restart then your clutch is still good to go. I had the exact same thing happen but it happened when I shifted from 2 into 3..... it was the rear differential. I'm sure your transmission is fine. Either your rear diff or center diff went out.

Yea I just had the clutch go out on me about 4 months ago I replaced it and the clutch still had pressure I can turn it off and on no problem it's just when I go to shift to move the car forward it acts as if it's in neutral in every gear I took it to a shop and the guy said it's the transmission assembly.?!? I've never heard of that before

Re: 02 WRX transmission failure
Probably means transmission. My bet is one of your differentials. If you broke a gear then the others along with reverse should still be operable. I thought my transmission went as well at the time, but after the guys at Subaru checked everything it was the rear diff.

Hmm seems odd how much did they charge you at Subaru to get it fixed.?

Re: 02 WRX transmission failure
The guy quoted me 700 for the part alone and 350 for labor witch is why I find it odd

Re: 02 WRX transmission failure
Mine was insurance cause I hit road debris about a minute before it happened. But you can get a used rear diff for like $150-$300. The install is relatively simple.

Hard to say if it was already on its way or if the debris had something to do with it since it hit the axle.

Re: 02 WRX transmission failure
If buying new just go with what they offering. It'll be the same price anywhere else plus you'll get the warranty. Buying used, check the local wrecking yards, or reputible vendors (not regular members) on NASIOC.

Re: 02 WRX transmission failure
I honestly don't know man. So long as it is a 3.9 Final Drive with a 1:1.1 transfer ratio you will be ok to use it so long as it bolts in. The main thing to remember is the WRX rear diff is a 3.454 and when combined with the 1.1 ratio comes out to 3.9FD which matches the center diff. 06-07 have a 1:1 transfer ration with a center diff with a FD of 3.7 so they will use a 3.7 rear diff. Hope that makes sense.
Best bet in my opinion is see if you can find a 02-05 one

Re: 02 WRX transmission failure
After reading some posts on forums and other searches it appears the WRX went back to a 3.9:1 FD beginning in 08, so based on that it should work. I would get confirmation from Subaru first just to be safe.

Re: 02 WRX transmission failure
I'll be standing by for confirmation. I'm keeping my eye open for an 04-05 transmission. Stronger gears than the 02 and with how Subaru kind of jumbled their way into the 03's with combo 02 parts, who knows what you are getting.
